Anne Hathaway's Life in Looks: Full Transcript with Timestamps

[00:00:10] This is one of those moments where it feels like a lifetime ago and like it happened yesterday, 5 minutes ago, I swear.

[00:00:18] So I am 16 years old in this; this was one of my first photo shoots ever, and if I remember correctly, it was an issue of TV Guide.

[00:00:29] I’d just been cast in my first ever television series called Get Real, where I played a character called Megan Green who was a rebellious valedictorian.

[00:00:41] I chose these jeans; I loved them, and I wore them proudly, but I kept waiting for them to have their moment, and they didn't.

[00:00:53] So the years went on and I eventually thought, "Okay, it's time to part with them," and I gave them away.

[00:00:58] The next year, Chloé came up with those beautiful patchwork jeans which I actually wore to The Idea of You premiere as an homage to these very jeans.

[00:01:13] Hello, Princess! This is the dress Princess Mia wears when she decides that she is going to accept the throne.

[00:01:20] Why do we love a makeover montage? I mean, why is the sky blue? These are questions that are bigger than me.

[00:01:34] I think I love growth, and I think that the makeover montage is the ancestress of TikTok.

[00:01:48] Oh my gosh, Ella Enchanted! This was one of the first days that we shot; Ella was a rebellious teen.

[00:02:05] We filmed in Ireland, and we were going for like a medieval socially conscious hippie, and I think we succeeded really well.

[00:02:23] This is my character Lureen Newsome from Brokeback Mountain, directed by the master Ang Lee.

[00:02:30] This is one of the films that changed my life; I'd been a cute actress up to this point, but this was the first time I'd ever been considered a real actress.

[00:02:40] None of us were over 25, and I just remember feeling like we've just been entrusted with something really important; I still get chills.

[00:03:26] We picked just everything with such care, and I really appreciate how beautifully my scarf is tied.

[00:03:35] Well, well, well, I see that I am wearing the Chanel boots! It's so funny because the last time I saw this outfit was on a meme.

[00:03:54] This is Andy Sachs in her post-makeover scene from The Devil Wears Prada, designed by the legend Patricia Field.

[00:04:04] I feel like part of the reason why the movie has such enduring power is because of the brilliance of the costume choices.

[00:04:12] A lot of people want to know if I knew it was going to be what it was; I didn't realize that it would actually take 20 years for that feeling to become undeniable.

[00:04:36] I was getting ready for a fashion show while I’d recently gotten my bangs back, and as I was going out the door I thought, "Oh, I kind of look like Andy."

[00:05:01] I think the most important thing in life is a great sense of humor, and I was thrilled that we could enjoy that moment together.

[00:05:12] That was the night I won the Oscar. When I look at this, I'm just struck by how much love the people in my immediate circle surrounded me with.

[00:05:31] If I'm really honest, it was a complicated time for a lot of different reasons, but I just made sure to earmark that moment.

[00:05:48] This is Dr. Amelia Brand in Christopher Nolan's Interstellar. I asked to test it in water because the costume was very heavy.

[00:06:13] I spent the next 8 weeks running just trying to build up my stamina to bear the weight of that.

[00:06:21] There's a physical component to filmmaking; you need to have grit and steeliness.

[00:06:34] You need to be willing to go that extra mile for this amazing art form that you truly can turn yourself inside out for. [00:07:05] The whole film is a feeling, and the idea that physics is poetic and emotional as well.

[00:07:25] As soon as I put this one on, I knew that it was perfect; it's a happy place for me, although I did not fully think about the cobblestones.

[00:07:42] I wish you could see the insides of it; the way it was constructed was just incredible.

[00:07:53] Literally everything that comes out of Donatella's mouth deserves to be remembered forever.

[00:08:23] She has so much power, and the way she uses it to bring people closer together is wonderful.

[00:08:39] This was the CFDA Fashion Awards, where I was a last-minute replacement for Sarah Jessica Parker.

[00:08:57] People just look you up and down; my memory is triggered by what people wear and what I've worn.

[00:09:23] I've never produced something at the level of The Idea of You; I've gotten to learn from the best. [00:10:01] Acting is not a solo sport, it's a team sport.

[00:10:04] To contribute to a world that does not rely on rigid dogma, but is able to take in the truth of someone else with curiosity and respect—that's what power means to me.

[00:10:20] I have taken my craft seriously and learned a great deal; you can trust me.
